Gladiator girls grab gold at Scottish Championships
The female lifters at Gladiator Weightlifting Club, formerly the Palace of Art Club, swept the board at the Scottish Senior Championships held in Pitlochry at the weekend.
All three female entrants, coached by former Scottish Commonwealth Games lifter Ray Cavanagh, won Gold in their respective categories.
16-year-old Stephanie McDiarmid, already a British Champion in 2010, snatched 40kg and clean and jerked 52kg in the 48kg category to equal her personal best and take 1st place.
Colette Will, 18, lifted in the 53kg class and snatched 50kg to equal her best and clean and jerked 63kg for a new PB and a new best total of 113kg and 1st place.
33-year-old Karen Idun, who is new to the sport and has been competing for just over a year, lifted in the 69kg class and snatched 43kg and clean and jerked 60kg to record new bests and 1st place.
The male lifters weren’t quite as successful, but still performed close to their personal bests.
Haris Ansari lifted in the 69kg class and snatched 85kg to equal his best. He clean and jerked 110kg before picking up a niggle in his lower back so had to be happy with 2nd place.
Danny Craig also performed well in the 85kg class but a knee injury kept him out of the medals.
