Scottish beach champions Barry McGuigan and Graham Riddle lost 18-21 14-21 to England's Tom Lord and Jake Sheaf in the first qualifying round of the English Masters European Tour event in Blackpool.

In the women's event, Team Edinburgh's Mel Coutts and England's Denise Austin lost in the second round of qualifying to Estonian pair Mari-Liis Graumann and Natalja Bratuhhina 16-21 19-21.

Two hundred of the leading beach players in Europe are taking part in the event whic is now part of the official tour.

Sixteen teams who played at the Beijing Olympics are present and a 2,000-seat grandstand has been set up.
