Edinburgh's Robin Miedzydbrodzki and new Spanish-born partner John Garcia-Thompson failed to make the main draw of the FIVB World Tour event in Stare Jablonki, Poland.

But the partnership, playing in their first major tour event, came agonisingly close to a big upset in the qualifying rounds.

The GB pair lost narrowly 18-21 25-23 16-18 to Austrian number eight seeds Daniel Hupfer and Paul Schroffenegger.

It is the start of an intense period of competition for Miedzybrodzki and Garcia-Thompson as they seek to establish themselves in the world rankings.
