New Beach Volleyball season opens in Porotbello
The Scottish beach circuit opens this weekend with Edinburgh's Portobello hosting the first of a seven-leg tour.

Events will also be played at St Andrews (twice), Troon, North Berwick, Broughty Ferry and in Grampian (at a venue to be confirmed) in an extended circuit which will run until September 13.

Graham Riddle from Galashiels and City of Edinburgh’s Barry McGuigan look favourites to take the men’s title in Portbello in a new pairing from last year.

Riddle and former partner Lars Jeppesen had a decent year in 2007, winning the Belfast leg of the Urban Beach Tour and finishing second at the events in Edinburgh and Birmingham.

McGuigan, who was third in Belfast with Jake Sheaf, has also made his mark on the beach.

In the women’s event, the experienced Gillian Lyall (Troon PA), who has recently announced she is retiring from indoor international volleyball, will partner Su Ragazzi’s Lynne Beattie in what looks a formidable pairing.

Troon PA pair Elaine Krawczyk and Anne Morrish also look a strong team and Team Edinburgh’s Mel Coutts, Scotland’s player of the year this year, will partner Eilidh Smith.
