Near miss for Scots

Scotland narrowly missed out on reaching the finals of the European Championship Small Countries division after a five-set loss to Iceland in Malta.

The Scots led by 2-1 on sets but Iceland hit back to win 25-22 24-26 23-25 25-22 15-9 in a match that was pivotal to the outcome of the tournament.

Scotland beat Malta in straight sets last night 25-17 25-22 25-15 but by that stage it was academic.

"The players were devastated after the loss to Iceland," admitted coach Tommy Dowens, "We played well against Malta with Ali Galloway absolutely outstanding but that just makes it more difficult to take."

Cyprus, who beat Scotland 25-21 25-15 25-16 in Friday's opener, won the event and Iceland also go through to the finals.
