Breakthrough for Mullin

Edinburgh's Shauna Mullin and English partner Zara Dempney assured themselves of their highest-ever placing at a FIVB Beach Volleyball World tour event in Kristiansand.

The British pair, seeded only 23rd, beat Norwegians Janna Kongshavn and Kathrine Maaseide 21-19 19-21 15-10 after reaching their first main draw since April.

They went on to defeat Brazilian number seven seeds Vivian Cunha and Angela Vieira 21-13 21-18 in the $380,000 Otera Open.

It put them into the quarter-finals and guaranteed their first top ten finish at a world tour event.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh pair Gavin Watt and Colin Macnab, the first Scots to play in the event, lost 21-13 21-15 to Spanish number three seeds Adrian Gavira and Alex Fernandez Rojas in their opening match in the European Under-23 Beach Championships in Yantarniy, Russia.
