Scottish tennis star gets nod for World University Games

Stirling University tennis star Katie Gater has been given the nod to represent Great Britain at this summer's World University Games in Serbia.

Gater, who used to live two doors down from British No. 1 Andy Murray in Dunblane, Perthshire, will board the plane to Belgrade in July as the 2008 Scottish Indoor Champion.

Law student Gater, 18, used to train with Murray as a youngster and was coached by his mother Judy.

And her illustrious neighbours obviously did the trick with Gater already having picked up two Grand Prix under-18 titles this season.

The 18-year-old will be joined in Belgrade by six other players, four based at American universities.

And Team GBR tennis manager James Andell has given Gater and co. a ringing endorsement ahead of the July tournament.

He said: "I believe we have the best university tennis players available to Great Birtain in this squad.

"I am looking forward to the challenge that the World University Games will bring.

"It is nice to have a mix of domestic and international based students in the squad."
