Pete Sampras backs Andy Murray to break Grand Slam duck in Australia
Tennis legend Pete Sampras insists Andy Murray is more than capable of breaking his Grand Slam duck at the Australian Open in January.
The former world No.1, who won 14 majors in his glittering career, has been impressed by the 22-year-old’s results in 2009, which have seen him win five titles.
Murray has not been seen in action since Britain’s Davis Cup defeat to Poland last month after he aggravated the wrist injury he picked up at the US Open.
And Sampras admits learning to deal with his injuries could be Murray’s biggest challenge.
“Andy is a great player and I believe he is on the verge of becoming a dominant player,” said Sampras.
“He plays a game that takes a lot of work on the body and I know he works hard off the court but if he is smart with his injuries and doesn’t play and make them worse, he will be fine.
“He will be fit and ready for Australia in January and after coming pretty close this year he will be able to taste winning a Grand Slam.
“He’s only in his early twenties so he has many years to improve and learn and he will breakthrough and win a couple of majors.”
