Reid and Simpson selected for GB Paralympic squad
Scottish wheelchair tennis stars Gordon Reid and Kevin Simpson have been selected for the GB squad that will compete at the Beijing Paralympics in September.
In the process, 16 year-old Reid, from Helensburgh, will become the youngest tennis player ever to represent Britain at the event.
They will join legendary figure Peter Norfolk, who in 2004 in Athens became the first Briton to medal in tennis at the Paralympics, taking gold in the quad singles and silver in the doubles.
Reid had not even taken up wheelchair tennis at the time of the Athens Games, but he has made great progress in the sport since 2005, becoming Britain's youngest ever national men's singles champion in 2007, at the age of 15, and is the reigning International Wheelchair Tennis Junior Masters boys' singles champion.
30 year-old Simpson, from joins his training partner Reid in the squad, having sealed his Paralympic Games debut with a tremendous performance to reach the last 16 of the recent Japan Open.
Paralympics GB Chief Executive, Phil Lane, said: “Congratulations to these eight athletes for gaining selection to the Paralympics GB team for Beijing. I’m delighted to see so many new faces among this squad, which is our youngest ever Paralympic wheelchair tennis squad.”
