Ayr's Nicola Slater and Brazilian partner Mana-Fernanda Alves knocked out top seeds Alexandra Mueller (US) and Dominika Dieskova (Slovakia) 6-4 7-6 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF event at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

But the pair lost in the quarter-finals to Americans Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey 4-6 6-1 10-7.

Slater had been bidding to reach her second successive semi-final after doing well in Sumter last week.

Slater lost 6-0 6-2 in the first round of the singles to Romanian number seven seed Anda Perianu.
