Andy Murray commits to GB team for Davis Cup relegation play-off
Andy Murray insists he will line up for Great Britian’s crucial Davis Cup relegation play-off against Poland next month – if he is fresh enough.
The World No.2 will kick off his quest for a debut Grand Slam title in America on August 31 but with the GB-Poland clash falling on September 18 there are fears that Murray may not be recovered in time.
Britain are facing the ignominy of a relegation play-off due to a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Ukraine in Glasgow last month – which Murray missed with a virus.
Defeat would see the British side demoted to Group II of the Euro/Africa Zone which includes Monaco, Egypt, Lithuania and Ireland but not if Murray can help it.
“I always want to play Davis Cup if it’s possible,” said Murray. “If I feel fresh and 100 per cent fit I will be there and try to help the team because we are not in the best position right now.”
But first the Scot has the small matter of the US Open.
“My goal is to win a Grand Slam," Murray added. "It’s very tough to do but I’m feeling more and more confident.”
