Andy Murray sticks up for under-fire hero Agassi
Scotland’s Andy Murray has leapt to the defence of childhood hero Andre Agassi following revelations that the American took drugs during his tennis career.
Agassi, who won all four majors in the 1990s, admitted in his new autobiography to taking crystal meth in 1997.
But 22-year-old Murray, who has criticised the current drug-testing programme in tennis for being too intrusive, refused to condemn his idol’s actions.
"I judge him as a tennis player,” said Murray. “He was great, one of the best of all time. No one wants drugs in sport but everyone makes mistakes.
"I don't think any of the players expected it but you've just got to move on.
"I loved Andre, met him numerous times. He was unbelievably nice to me. I practised with him quite a lot.
"I guess it's something he has to deal with him himself. He's entitled to say whatever he wants and I wish him the best.”
