Murray confident ahead of clay clash

Andy Murray has done his best to play down his French Open tennis expectations but now the pressure is starting to crank up.

Murray arrived at Roland Garros with only one semi-final appearance on clay to his record, in Monte Carlo just a few weeks ago.

His objectives were simple - gain experience, tune up for Wimbledon and hopefully make the second week.

But his victories and the defeats of reigning champion Rafael Nadal and world number four Novak Djokovic have opened things up while even three-times finalist Roger Federer - now the favourite - has struggled.

Murray is the top ranked seed in the top half of the draw and faces Fernando Gonzalez in Tuesday's quarter-finals.

Gonzalez is currently ranked 12th in the world and the pair have played twice, most recently when Murray won in five sets at the US Open at Flushing Meadow three years ago.

One year before that, the Chilean won in three sets at an indoor tournament in Switzerland.

However, both men are different and better players since those encounters and Murray is taking nothing for granted against an opponent who has been an occasional practice partner in Paris.

"Practice is not the same as matches," he said.

"He is a very unpredictable player and that makes him very difficult to play against. I'm going to have to be consistent and keep the ball deep.

"If you leave the ball in the middle of the court against him, you could get in trouble.

"He's a very tough opponent and he's won all his matches pretty easily. He's got a huge forehand, serves well and loves playing on clay."

Murray is only the third British player in the open era to reach the last eight at Roland Garros but he's already thinking ahead.

"Tim Henman reached the semi-finals here (in 2004) so it would be nice to match that," he added.

"I always felt that I could play well on clay. I just needed a bit more time to adjust my game to it.

"The more matches I've played, the better my results have got."

But Gonzalez has yet to drop a set at Roland Garros and overwhelmed Romania's Victor Hanescu in quick-fire fashion in their third round encounter.

"Murray is playing well, he's world number three and he deserves to be," he said.

"I've not played him for a while and it will be a very difficult match."
