Andy Murray made to work to secure third round spot at French Open
Andy Murray went from sublime to ridiculous and back to sublime as he booked his French Open third round place with a rollercoaster 6-3 2-6 7-5 6-4 win.
Third seed Murray had looked imperious during his quick-fire victory over Juan Ignacio Chela and he raced to the opening set against Italy's Potito Starace in just 31 minutes.
Another processional victory looked a formality as Murray looked to enhance his growing reputation on his least favoured surface
But the world number 104 - who had played down his pre-match chances - is no slouch on clay courts and is unbeaten in ten Davis Cup singles matches.
He left Murray flatfooted with a series of the Scot's trademark drop shots to level the match and then broke twice early in the third set to establish a convincing 5-1 advantage.
He even had two set point to take a 2-1 lead before Murray - who admits he is not a fan of morning matches - finally woke from his slumber as he turned the match around in just 20 minutes.
He won the next six games on the spin to claim the set, breaking Starace's resolve as the Italian kicked the red dirt in frustration.
The British number one then closed out the fourth set with a much-improved performance and will now face either Fernando Lopez and Janko Tipsarevic as he attempts to reach the fourth round for the first time.
Elsewhere, 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez - a potential quarter-final opponent for Murray - easily dispatched Portugal's Rui Machado 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
