Merchiston and Dunblane celebrate success

Merchiston Castle boys and Dunblane High’s girls team are the new Scottish Schools Tennis Team champions after coming through in style on finals day at St. George’s in Edinburgh.


In the boys event, Merchiston reached the final with a 4-2 victory over High School of Glasgow while defending champions Madras College defeated Dollar Academy 5-1. The Merchiston team of Stewart Crerar, James McKie, Jasper Gonella and Patrick Baker then triumphed 4-2 in the final with High School proving too Stong for Dollar in the 3rd/4th place play-off, winning 6-0.


In the girls competition, the holders Balerno High were eliminated in the last four by Dunblane, who won 4-2, while the hosts, St George’s reached the final when Hutchesons’ Grammar were forced to concede due to an injury with the match poised at 3-3.


In the final, Dunlane, who fielded Katie Gater, Julie Blackwood, Lorna Gater and Julie Smillie, ran out 6-0 victors over the hosts with Balerno receiving a walkover for third spot.
