Singles win and doubles loss for McCulloch at Youth Olympics
ST Andrews tennis star Morven McCulloch kicked off her European Youth Olympic Festival campaign with a comfortable win on Monday.
The 15-year-old, who attends St George's High School for Girls in Edinburgh, cruised to a straight sets 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bulgaria's Stefani Andreeva in Tampere, Finland.
McCulloch, who trains at the Tennis Scotland Academy, will now face sixteenth seed, and home favourite, Julianna Heino for a place in the last 16.
"My game-plan was to just build up the points and not to panic," said McCulloch. "I was trying to get her on the move so that I was in control of the points.
"But there is definitely still some room for improvement as the rounds progress."
But McCulloch suffered doubles heartache at the Ruotula Tennis Centre as she partnered Jazzamay Drew to a nail-biting three setter before falling 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 to Portugese duo Sofia Araujo and Maria Palhoto.
