Murray faces Nadal in semi final of US Open
Andy Murray gave his fans another night of drama as the sun set over New York yesterday, when the young Scotsman overcame his Argentinean nemesis Juan Martin Del Potro to reach the last four of the US Open.
He will now face his Wimbledon and Australian Open tormentor Rafa Nadal in the semi-final on Friday. His advancement to this stage guarantees a rise to the top four in the world rankings.
In a match that saw both players produce spells of scintillating tennis weaved in with a collection of amateurish errors, it was Murray who eventually prevailed just when it looked that Del Potro was gaining the upper hand.
Though he looked to be very comfortable and in control in the early stages of the match, going two sets to nil up, both times Murray had to take the set finales to a tie break. However he won both breaks emphatically, 7-2 in the first and 7-1 in the second.
In the third set Del Potro mounted a comeback, winning 6-4 and making Murray look less dominant than he had been in the earlier exchanges.
The young Scot’s head seemed to have dropped when he double-faulted several time in the fourth set, and dropped his serve at the midway point allowing Del Potro to take a 5-4 lead.
From there on it was all Murray however, and he eventually prevailed 7-5.
His brother Jamie will play with Liezel Huber in the final of the mixed doubles today.
