Elena Baltacha battles bravely in loss to Kim Clijsters
Elena Baltacha bowed out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto but not without giving former world number one Kim Clijsters a a solid workout.
The Scottish number one, who came through two qualifiers to reach the main draw, lost 6-3 6-4.
But she made Clijsters fight for everyting in the second set and gave a good account of herself.
Her serving let her down at crucial points in the second set.
“I missed quite a good opportunity in that second set," said Baltacha, who starts her US Open qualifying campaign next week.
“I made far too many unforced errors and you can't get away with that against someone like Kim. But I felt like I gave it everything I had and really enjoyed the whole experience.
“For the first few weeks in America, I don't think I was too reserved and not playing my usual aggressive game.
“But I feel like I've managed to get the balance right this week and that's really encouraging. “I'll be at my highest ranking of 102 next week so it's great to be edging forward.”
