Borg meeting inspires Devine

Rising tennis star Emma Devine insists she can emulate Junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson after enjoying some one-on-one tuition from Bjorn Borg.

The 14-year-old from Edinburgh has recently returned from an HSBC Sporting Exchange in China, where under the guidance of 11-time Grand Slam winner, Borg, she tested herself against equally promising youngsters from the Shanghai area.

And after returning from the Far East, Devine immediately set her sights on joining Robson on the women’s circuit.

“I had an awesome time in Shanghai and to play with Bjorn Borg was an unbelievable privilege,” said Devine, who tried her hand at Tai Chi, attended a local school and tasted jellyfish as part of the cultural experience.

“Talking to him was really helpful he had loads of advice for us which will be a huge help in the future.

“We asked how he kept going when he was winning everything and how he must have felt when he lost and how he recovered from that – he’s such an inspiration.

“The whole trip has been so inspiring for me that at the moment I feel like I’m ready for anything and hopefully I can go on and have a successful career in tennis.

“I want to follow Laura Robson who is a massive inspiration to all the juniors all over the country. “To see her win Wimbledon was amazing and it makes you realise that anything is possible and my aim in to join Laura on the WTA tour in a couple of years.”

As part of the initiative Devine – who was hand-picked by former World No.1 Justin Henin to join their 6th Sense Academy in Belgium - also met Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia as the Spanish golfer captured the HSBC Champions trophy.

And Borg has no doubt Devine’s once in a lifetime opportunity in China will aid her bid to follow in the footsteps of Robson, after the British youngster clinched her first senior event at the age of just 14.

“I always found playing in different countries around the world a hugely enriching experience, so I hope this visit allows the HSBC Sporting Exchange pupils to learn from and appreciate a different sporting environment and culture,” said the five-time All England club champion.

“When I was playing there were several styles of player, but nowadays players have to have strong aspects to their game in all areas.

“I believe I have plenty to offer these young players and hopefully I will have motivated to them to achieve greater things.”
