Elena Baltacha suffered a straight sets defeat in the first round of the women's singles at the Fes Grand Prix in Morocco.
The Scottish number one was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by Bulgaria's Sesil Karatancheva who is ranked nearly 100 places below Baltacha in the WTA rankings.
The tournament is on Baltacha's least favoured clay surface and is part of her preparation for the French Open.
Baltacha's singles ranking is likely to dip below 150 this week as a result of the defeat.
She will continue to play in the doubles with British partner Amanda Elliot.
They will face Alisa Kleybanova and Ekatarina Makarova, the third seeds from Russia in the first round.
