Elena Baltacha cements top 100 spot with Shrewsbury win
Elena Baltacha celebrated moving into the top 100 in the world by beating fellow Brit Katie O’Brien in the final of the Aegon Pro Series in Shrewsbury.
The British No.2, who will be confirmed in the world’s top 100 when the world rankings are released on Monday, looked like breezing to the crown when she roared into a 6-3, 4-1 lead.
But O’Brien dug in to take the second set 6-4 – only for Baltacha to hit back by taking the decisive set 6-3.
“Katie played really well and stuck to her guns even when I was on top in the second set,” said Baltacha.
“I’ve not played against her for a long time and she has really improves – she fights and fights and fights.
“I’ve won at this level of event before but to win on home soil is fantastic – these are not piddly tournaments – they are very strong.”
