Illness causes Baltacha to miss Devon tournament
Scottish number one Elena Baltacha saw her hopes of glory in the LTA event in Barnstaple, Devon, scuppered by illness.
The British number three's preparations for the event were hit when she was laid low for five days prior to the event.
She struggled in her opening match against Austrian teenager Melanie Klaffner before coming through 7-6 6-7 6-2 after holding a match point in the second set.
But she could not sustain it and lost in the second round to British number nine Anna Smith, a player ranked more than 250 places below her on the world lists, 6-2 6-1.
