Scotland's Elena Baltacha the only Brit to join Andy Murray in Wimbledon second round
Scot Elena Baltacha is the first - and only - British woman through to the second round at Wimbledon.
The 25-year-old won an epic three-setter 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Ukraine's world number 33 Alona Bondarenko, as darkness descended on court one at the All England Club.
The British number two - who reached the second round at Wimbledon last year - and men's hope Andy Murray are the only two home players to progress past the first two days of the tournament.
"It's been a long day but a great day for me," said world number 106 Baltacha, who watched fellow Brits Anne Keothavong, Mel South, Katie O'Brien, Laura Robson and Georgie Stoop all fall at the first hurdle.
"I was aware that I was the last hope because I've seen a lot of the girls go out in tough three setters, so there was a bit of pressure on me.
"But it was strange because I was thinking all the way through ?I'm going to win this match'.
"This is my best win at Wimbledon by far. Alona has been playing really well - but I was so confident going into the match that I really thought I had a chance and thankfully I came through.
"I've been playing well and I'm determined to continue my push for the top 100."
