Scottish number one Elena Baltacha suffered a shock first round defeat at the $50,000 Challenger at Lexington, Kentucky.
Baltacha, the top seed, went out in three sets to unseeded American Carly Gullickson 6-4 2-6 6-1.
In the men's singles, fellow Scot Jamie Baker also lost out in the first round.
He went down to Indian Somdev Devvarman 7-5 6-2 after a tight first set.
