Andy Murray-effect increases tennis popularity in Scotland
Andy Murray continues to inspire a new generation of Scottish tennis stars, despite failing to end Great Britain’s 73-year wait for a home Wimbledon winner, according to Tennis Scotland.
The British number one became the first British male tennis player to break into the world’s top three this year but bowed out at the semi-final stage at the All England Club to the USA’s Andy Roddick.
But Tennis Scotland Dave McDermid remains adamant the Scotsman’s success is having a profound effect on youngsters across the country.
"We've witnessed bounces over the last few years as Andy has risen up the rankings. But this summer all our feedback has been that courts are very rarely free at all,” he said.
"The biggest rise in interest is among kids who just want to pick up a racket and experience the same thrill.”
