Andy Murray should be focusing on grand slams, says LTA chief Draper
Lawn Tennis Association chief executive Roger Draper insists he is happy to let Andy Murray decide whether he will feature in Great Britain's future Davis Cup matches.
The Scot won both of his singles rubbers against Poland over the weekend, but could not prevent Great Britain from slumping to a 3-2 defeat and slipping out of Europe/Africa Zone Group I.
Despite Murray's world number three ranking, the format of Davis Cup tennis guarantees that a team requires strength in depth if it is to succeed, something Great Britain currently desperately lacks.
While Murray chalked up both Great Britain's victories, teenager Dan Evans, making his Davis Cup debut, looked decidedly out of his depth as the world number 303 crashed to consecutive straight-set defeats.
And Draper acknowledged it could suit both parties, should Murray purely focus on his pursuit of a maiden grand slam, handing the likes of Evans, James Ward, Josh Goodall and Alex Bogdanovic some much-needed Davis Cup experience.
"Andy should be focusing on winning grand slams, that's where his priorities should lie," said Draper.
"The choice is down to him and while we'd obviously love him to play for his country, the reality is Andy is at a different level now.
"I completely understand if Andy decides to take a break because at the moment he should be focusing on winning grand slams.
"And it could be a fantastic opportunity to start blooding some of the other players and get them more battle-hardened in tougher environments."
