Murray marches on at French Open

Andy Murray was back to his very best to reach the last eight at Roland Garros with a straight sets victory over Marin Cilic.

The British number one came through 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 against the giant Croat, seeded 13th, to reach his first French Open quarter final where he will face Chile's 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez.

Murray will also go into the quarter finals with one less worry after world number one Rafael Nadal lost his first ever match at the French Open to Sweden's Robin Soderling.

Towering over Murray at 6ft 6in and with a heavy serve, 20-year-old Cilic is perhaps better suited to the grass courts of Wimbledon but as winner of the 2005 junior French Open - where he beat Murray in the semi finals - the Croat is no mug on the red dirt.

And after winning his first three rounds with relative ease, Cilic was considered a major threat to the Brit's progress.

The opening exchanges were tense but the fiery Scot was in a relaxed mood and held his nerve at 5-5 to secure the decisive break and open up a one-set lead.

There was more of the same in the second set, and while Cilic forced a tie-break, Murray was in complete control and doubled his advantage.

Cilic has never won a match in which he has found himself two sets to nil down and there was little evidence to suggest that record was going to change as Murray wrapped things up with a 6-1 demolition job to take his place in the last eight.
