Smith seeks World Championship place

Scotland’s Lewis Smith produced three lifetime best swims at last week’s British Championships In Sheffield – now it’s fingers crossed that he gets the opportunity to go even faster at the world championships in Rome this summer.

The Warrender 20-year-old claimed a hat-trick of silver medals at the Ponds Forge Pool in the 400m and 200m individual medleys, plus the 400m freestyle.

Only last week’s winners are guaranteed to be selected in Team GB for Rome - Hannah Miley and Kris Gilchrist were the two Scots gold medalists - but Smith said: “I’d certainly like to think I’ve done enough.”

The final trials are at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow in June – that’s when Smith hopes to clinch his berth.

Smith’s highlight in Sheffield was a Scottish record of 4:14.06 in the punishing 400m medley – a massive five seconds inside his previous best.

In January, Smith moved from Edinburgh and followed Warrender coach, Ian Wright, to one of the new British Intensive Training Centres in Stirling.  He also enrolled at the University.

“It’s been a good move,” he said. “I’m now training with a group of top swimmers and it’s given me extra confidence. It’s also nice to have university as a distraction from swimming.

“I’ve put in so much good quality work over the past few months and now I’m looking forward to having another really good block of work before the Scottish Championships. By then, I want to be swimming even faster and make sure that I’m picked for Rome.”
