Scots set sights on Worlds in Rome

Olympic finalists Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick are among the Scots in opening day action at the British Gas National Championships that run from Monday to Friday in Sheffield this week.

As the first qualifying opportunity for the GB team for the World Championships in Rome this summer, Miley’s main target is the two medley events – and she travelled south from Inverurie in confident mood.

The 19-year-old won ten titles and set five Scottish records at the Scottish short-course Championships in Glasgow in January – and she swam the fastest time in the world this year in the 400m medley at last week’s North of Scotland District Championships.

“Hannah is really happy with the way training has being going,” said her father and coach, Patrick. “It will be good to post fast times this week and try and get the selection out of the way.

“She has entered a number of events, but will be focussing on the medleys and the 200m freestyle. If the first couple of days go well, then she will have a free rein to really enjoy herself.”

Miley has the top entry time for the 200m medley, while Renwick, who reached the 200m freestyle final at the Olympics in Beijing last August, is third on the list in the 400m freestyle.

The second and final World Championship qualifying event will be the Scottish Championships in Glasgow I June, and double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has already pencilled in a possible trip north.

“We have two qualifying opportunities to qualify for the British team,” said the modest 20-year-old from Mansfield. “This week will tell me where I am and if I need to alter my preparations ahead of the second trials in Scotland in June.”

Adlington takes part in the 400m freestyle on the opening day, and her main challengers will include Scottish Olympian, Caitlin McClatchey.
