
Scots help Britain to Tri-Nations Cup victory

Scottish swimmers help British team towards success
With six Scots in the team - Robyn Matthews, Michael Jamieson and Iain MacMillan (all City of Edinburgh), Louise Pate (Heart of Midlothian), Andrew Mayor (City of Newcastle) and Lewis Smith (Warrender) - Britain came out top in the Tri-Nations Cup against Canada and France in Quebec.
Smith got the Cup off to a perfect start by taking gold in the 400m IM in 4:19.42 and Jamieson added another victory in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:14.85.
Mayor was another Scottish golden boy. He claimed a new personal best in the men's 100m butterfly with a time of 53.60.
Pate won silver in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:00.89, while MacMillan claimed a bronze in a very close 200m butterfly final, where he touched in 2:00.64.
The success continued in the relays with a gold medal in the 4x100 Medley relay. Mayor, Marco Loughran, Chris Watkinson and Daniel Hestor stormed to a three second victory over the French team in a time of 3:41.67.
Matthews helped the 4x200m freestyle relay team take silver. She joined Louisa Farrer-Fisher, Jazmin Carlin and Rachel George in touching in 8:11.30.
The British squad won a total of 44 medals, comprising 20 gold, 14 silver and ten bronze, throughout the competition showing the strength of a young squad that will all have London 2012 in their sights.
