Hannah Miley become the new European 400m IM champion
Scotland’s Hannah Miley was the toast of the GB team when she won gold in the 400m individual medley European Champion on the final day of the 13th LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Garioch 20-year-old powered her way to victory in a British record time of 4:25.66, just 0.6 seconds outside the European Record.
Defending champion Mireia Garcia Belmonte (Spain) took the silver in 4:27.60 while Zsuzsanna Jakabos (Hungary) settled for bronze in 4:28.46.
“I knew it would be a tough race and I didn’t go out too fast in order to keep some power for the end,” said a delighted Miley, who is coached by her father. Patrick. “I didn’t worry about the other swimmers and I’m very happy because it’s my first individual gold medal.”
Scot Kris Gilchrist, who is based in Paris, took over a second off his own British Record in the final of the Men’s 200m breaststroke. Swimming in an outside lane, Gilchrist paced the race well, but perhaps left a bit too much to do over the last 50m and finished just outside the medals in 4th place, in a time of 2:04.16.
