Miley shattters Commonwealth record

Inverurie’s Hannah Miley broke the Commonwealth short course record to win the 400m medley at the British Gas Grand Prix in Leeds.

Miley, who celebrated her 20th birthday on Saturday, clocked 4.27.22 as she outbattled Canada’s Tanya Hunks on the freestyle leg.

But the Scot – who reached two finals at last week’s World Championships in Rome – insisted there was more to come after an encouraging few weeks that have underlined her long predicted potential.

“I went into the final wanting to do a 4:25 but that will now have to wait,” she said.

“I bettered my PB so I can’t complain too much.

“It is really good to have lowered my Commonwealth record on the back of a long four weeks of training and swimming.

“The heat was a comfortable race but the final was tougher. I was really going for it because I did want the world record.

“But it is nice to have finished with that swim and to know I am getting closer to the world record. I am going to go back and look at my splits and see what I can improve on.”

Elsewhere, Scottish team-mate Kris Gilchrist lowered the British 200m breaststroke record to 2.04.53.

Warrender’s Lewis Smith, who competed in the world championships in Rome last week, took the silver medal in the 400m individual medley.

The Edinburgh swimmer clocked 4:04.89 in finishing runner-up to GB teammate, Joe Roebuck, who set a new British record of 4:01.88.

Scotland’s Caitlin McClatchey, a relay medalist in Rome, helped the GB quartet slice over six seconds from the British 4 x 200m freestyle relay record.

Providing a great first leg of 1:55.92, Jo Jackson, Fran Halsall and Lizzie Simmonds backed her up to post a superb time of 7:39.20.
