Miley secures another gold at Scottish nationals

Hannah Miley is going to take some stopping at next month's World Championships in Rome.

The 19-year-old Scot continued her imperious form in the 200m medley at the British Gas Scottish National Championships, just a day after easing to 400m medley victory.

Ever since she clocked new European records for both disciplines, Miley has been untouchable and will touch down in the Eternal City as the world's number female medley swimmer.

Miley is only too aware the World Championships will be a different prospect, but as displayed in her willingness to compete in ten events in Glasgow to ensure she arrives in Rome in peak condition, there is a steely determination to the young Scot.

And while she will be the first to acknowledge she will have to step it up a gear if she is to even reach the podium in Rome, Miley is perfectly primed to make up for her Olympic disappointment, having finished sixth in the Water Cube last summer.

"I achieved what I needed to in the March meet in Sheffield and qualified for all my main events, so this is just another step in terms of training and building up to Rome," said Miley.

"I was pleased to win the 200m medley because that, along with the 400m medley is what I really want to do well in at Rome.

"The Worlds will be a different proposition though. There are always brilliant swimmers just behind you pushing you all the way, like Stephanie Rice, so I will really need to up my game if I am to come away from Rome with a medal."

In one of the best races of the day, double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington just held off British rival Jo Jackson to win her top event, the 800m freestyle. The world-record holder touched in 8:16.81, exactly a second ahead of Jackson.

“It’s great that Jo and I are pushing each other,” said Adlington. “We’re rivals, but also great friends. We’ve competed against each other for such a long time and it’s brilliant that we are now both at world level.”

City of Glasgow’s Robbie Renwick, an Olympic finalist in Beijing last year over 200m, picked up the silver medal in the 400m freestyle in 3:49.92, while Warrender’s Lewis Smith was fourth as he warned up to make his bid for a world championship place in the 400m medley tomorrow.

Iain MacMillan (Edinburgh University) added to the Scottish medal tally with a bronze in the 200m butterfly. Fastest qualifier from the heats, the 22-year-old clocked 1”59.21 in a final won by Loughborough’s Joe Roebuck in 1:58.25.

Elsewhere, in water polo, Portobello defeated Dunfermline 15-10 in the Scottish Cup final at HMS Caledonia at Rosyth. The Edinburgh side held the edge in age and experience to regain the Cup from the Fifers.

But Dunfermline retained the women’s Cup after the Dundee outfit of Menzies Whitehill were unable to raise a full team.
