GB men break British record in qualifying for final
GB men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team, which included three Scots, today set a new British record in qualifying for the final, to be swam tomorrow (Wednesday).
Robbie Renwick, Andrew Hunter and David Carry joined England’s Ross Davenport in recording a time of seven minutes, 7.89 seconds to finish fourth fastest in the semi-final behind the USA, Italy and Russia.
Their hopes of a gold medal will depend on the form of the blistering American four, including Michael Phelps, who shattered the Olympic record as they qualified for the final, shaving more than two seconds off the previous best in 7:04.66.
If the Americans continue that form into the final, the Brits can hope for silver at best.
Elsewhere, Edinburgh’s Kris Gilchrist qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s 200m breast-stroke, swimming a time of 2:11.13. That race will also take place on Wednesday.
