Caitlin McClatchey swims new PB but fails to make 200m final
Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey just missed out the 200m freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships, despite rewriting her personal best.
The 23-year old was an agonising four hundredths of a second outside of the qualifying mark after clocking 1.56.62 at the Foro Italico.
Italian Federica Pellegrini announced her intentions with another world record swim leaving McClatchey to wonder what might have been.
"Federica is producing some amazing times and is setting the standard," admitted McClatchey, whose time was nearly three seconds slower than the Italian.
"She's got fantastic support and the atmosphere around her races is incredible.
"It was a personal best for me but I'm obviously really disappointed to be so close to the final, I would have loved to race in this atmosphere.
"However, it's not like I didn't try because I've got a new personal best but it's frustrating because I felt like I had something left in the tank.
"Maybe I paced the race a little bit wrong ,which is obviously disappointing but I can't dwell on that."
Meanwhile, Scot Kris Gilchrist failed to make the semi-final stage for the second time in three days, despite smashing a new personal best in the 50m breaststroke.
The 25-year-old's time of 28.07seconds was well off the qualifying standard.
"Whenever you go into a major international meeting and you don't get a personal best time you will be disappointed" said Gilchrist, who will also compete in the 200m breaststroke later this week.
