Iain Macmillan breaks Todd Cooper's 200m butterfly record at ASA Championships
Records tumbled at the ASA Championships in Sheffield with Edinburgh University's Iain Macmillan breaking the Scottish 200m butterfly mark twice in one day.
The record, held by Olympian Todd Cooper, had stood for 4 years and 23 year old Macmillan took 0.2 secs off the mark in the heats and then sliced off a further in taking gold in the final in 1:57.24.
Delighted with his efforts, Macmillan cited some areas within his training programme that he believes made the difference commenting,
"I have been working a lot on improving my body strength and this has allowed me to get out quicker on the first 100m whilst feeling easy. We've also been focusing on maintaining technical skills within training and trying to make sure I transfer these in to the race situation,” he said.
“I think this has made the difference and with fly swimming across the world moving on so much I can't wait to get in there to challenge."
Team-mate Louise Pate stormed to victory in the women's open 100m butterfly, breaking her own Scottish Record in 59.71. Pate controlled her pace on the first 50m turning 4th in 28.56 but changed gear after the turn to move through and take the gold dropping under the minute mark for the first time.
Edinburgh University coach Chris Jones was pleased with both of his swimmers efforts: "With Iain it's been a combination of the past two seasons work and he has had to be patient to see the benefits of the training he has been doing.”
Lucy Ellis (Stirling Swim/Stirling ITC) continued her fine form by winning gold in the 200m freestyle. Sixteen year-old Ellis, who broke the Scottish Junior Record in the morning heats, touched out Rebecca Turner of Sheffield by 0.01.
