Laura Smith set to represent Scotland

England-born Lauren Smith is set to represent Scotland in search of synchronised swimming glory at next year's Commonwealth Games.

The 26-year-old is currently part of an 18-strong Great Britain squad, set to be whittled down to 12 ahead of this July's World Championships in Rome.

Smith is at present immersed in intensive 40-hour training weeks at the High Performance Centre in Aldershot as she prepares for team action at the European Cup in Andorra next month.

And the 2007 British Championships gold medallist, whose father was born in Glasgow - is convinced the chance to spearhead Scotland's campaign at New Delhi 2010 will secure a bright future for her and for Great Britain.

"My real love is solo synchronised swimming and if I were to compete at next year's Commonwealth Games that's what I would be doing," she said.

"I was a reserve for the 2006 Games in Melbourne and that was really tough to take. But should I get the chance to compete for Scotland it would be a dream come true.

"Synchronised swimming is definitely going to be an event at next year's Commonwealths but there is a chance that it might be taken out of the schedule for Glasgow 2014.

"So in truth it's important that as many nations as possible enter in Delhi and hopefully I can do my bit by competing for Scotland."
