Kris and Gregor strike gold

City of Edinburgh duo Kris Gilchrist and Gregor Tait continued exciting build-ups to the Olympic Games by collecting gold at the Mare Nostrum Series Canet Meet in France.

Last weekend, Gilchrist won the 200m breaststroke at the Seven Hills Meet in Rome and he followed up by taking gold in the same event in 2:12.92 at a meet littered with world-class competitors.

Tait won gold in the 100m backstroke in 55.38 and then added a bronze over the 200m distance in 1:59.18 as he also displayed great form in the final few weeks before the Olympics in Beijing in August.

Kirsty Balfour, the third Edinburgh swimmer among Scotland's ten Olympians, was third in the 200m breaststroke in 2:29.53.

Alena Popchanka, wife of City of Edinburgh's head coach, Fred Vergnoux, won both the 50m (25.49) and 100m freestyle (54.79). She will be competing for France in her fourth Olympics this year.

This week, the City of Edinburgh squad will be heading to Sardinia for a few weeks' training before returning for the ASA National Championships in Liverpool at the start of next month.
