Hannah Miley secures place in GB team for world championships
Scotland’s Hannah Miley clinched her place in the GB team for this summer’s world championships with a stunning record-breaking victory in the 200m individual medley at the British Gas National Championships in Sheffield.
Coached by her father Patrick at the Garioch Club in Inverurie, the 19-year-old smashed the European and British record with a time of 2:09.59 - just over a second outside the world record held by Australia’s Stephanie Rice.
“I felt really good and just went it for in the final,” said the Olympic finalist in the 400m medley. “After I came back from the Olympics last August, I just took two weeks’ break and then worked on becoming bigger, faster and stronger. It’s paid off.
“I didn’t really know that I was in such good shape, but it’s so good to do so well today. Now I’m just looking forward to the rest of the Championships.”
Not long after clinching her individual place for the world championships in Rome in July, the all-rounder was back in the pool to make a stab for a Team GB 4 x 200m freestyle relay place. She successfully came through the semi-finals, and will go into the final as the fifth fastest (1:59.58).
Scotland’s Caitlin McClatchey was the second fastest qualifier in 1:58.49. She was sandwiched in between her Loughborough clubmate, Jo Jackson (1:56.96), and double Olympic champion, Rebecca Adlington (1:59.13).
Another three Scots - Edinburgh’s Kris Gilchrist, Warrender’s Lewis Smith and Andrew Hunter (Stirling) - showed that they could join Miley on the plane to Italy this summer after posting the quickest times in semi-finals.
Gilchrist, who is now training in France, will go into the 100m breaststroke final with a qualifying mark of 1:00.57. Darren Mew was next best with 1:01.11.
Smith, second in the 400m freeestyle on Monday, clocked 2:02.48 in the 200 medley and his closest challenger in the final should be Stockport’s James Goddard. Edinburgh University’s Michael Jamieson was third quickest in 2:03.66.
In the 200m freestyle, Hunter finished in 1:47.10, with Wales’ David Davies in second in 1:47.31 and City of Glasgow’s Robbie Renwick, a finalist at the Olympics in Beijing last August, taking the third qualifying spot in 1:47.55.
