Scots shine on final day of National Championships in Sheffield
Garioch’s Hannah Miley and Edinburgh’s Kris Gilchrist celebrated victory on the final day of the British Gas National Championships in Sheffield – and both are now looking forward to swimming for Team GB at the world championships in Rome this summer.
Caitlin McClatchey, runner-up in both the 100m and 200m freestyle, is another Scot guaranteed to be on the plane to Rome in July as a member of medal-chasing relay squads.
A great all-rounder, Miley claimed her second European record of the week with a time of 4:31.33 in her favourite 400m individual medley. Having already set a European record over 200m, the 19-year-old who is coached by her father, Patrick, will be a real medal contender in both events at the world championships.
Completing a punishing schedule, Miley went on to strike gold in the 200m breaststroke in 2:26.31, almost four seconds clear of Trowbridge’s Charlotte Barnes.
Miley, who trains at the small Garioch Club in Inverurie, won ten titles at the Scottish short-course championships in January and the youngster said: “I’ve been working very hard in training. It was great to go out tonight and post such a good time. Now I can really look forward to the worlds.”
With winners all gaining selection for the Italian trip in July, Gilchrist made sure of his place in the 200m breaststroke. The 25-year-old was just outside his British record in 2:10:60 and was pushed close at the finish by Bath’s Richard Webb (2:10.75)
Warrender’s Lewis Smith collected his third silver medal of the championships with a Scottish record in the 400m individual medley – but with only the winner gaining selection for Rome he will now be setting his sights on securing his world championship berth at the final trials, the Scottish Championships in June
Cardiff’s Thomas Haffield won in a British record of 4:12.39 with the Edinburgh swimmer taking the runner-up spot in the Scottish mark of 4:14.06.
