Gilchrist planning Scottish homecoming

Edinburgh swimmer Kris Gilchrist is planning a Scottish homecoming as he bids to secure a second spot at the World Championships in Rome in June.

The 25-year-old breaststroke specialist picked up a place in the 200m after taking home gold at the British Gas Championships in Sheffield in March but failed to repeat the trick in the 100m.

Only the winner of each event secured safe passage at Ponds Forge with one further place up for grabs at the Scottish National Championship in Glasgow.

The former City of Edinburgh swimmer upped sticks and moved to France to train under coach Fred Vergnoux after the Beijing Olympics but can't wait to return to his homeland.

"I am based in Paris now and I have only been back to Scotland once which was at Christmas so it would be nice to race there," said Gilchrist, who had to settle for silver behind James Gibson in the 200m breaststroke final.

"I think my team in Paris will be allowed to race which they weren't allowed to do in Sheffield so that should spur me on.

"I met my target of qualifying for the World Champs now I just have to do all I can to get another place.

"Surprisingly my 100 was better than my 200 in Sheffield but it was a strong field and I know what I have to do to put that right in Glasgow."
