Top swimmers to participate in National Open Championships before world's in Rome
Britain’s top swimmers – including double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington - will be taking part at the Scottish Gas National Open Championships at tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow at the end of June.
It is the final qualifying event for the world championships in Rome in July – Hannah Miley and Kris Gilchrist are the two Scots who have already secured their places.
British Swimming Head Coach Dennis Pursley, who joined British Swimming last year, is looking forward to the four all-important days in Glasgow.
“I am hoping to see the athletes step up again at this meet knowing that their final opportunity to qualify for the World Championships is at this meet,” Pursley said.
“The World Championships are one of four bench-mark events and so there is a lot at stake for the swimmers that are trying to gain qualification to Rome.
“For the swimmers that haven’t qualified, it is simple, they don’t go unless they perform in Glasgow and because of this I will be expecting fast swimming from those athletes.
“The athletes that have already been selected will be swimming through this competition and aiming to peak for Rome, but we saw some surprising performances in Sheffield and so you can never discount them pulling something out of the bag in Glasgow.
“Some of our overseas athletes had to miss the first trial due to other commitments and so this will be their one and only chance to qualify.”
