Top talent joins Vergnoux's Edinburgh stars
The City of Edinburgh scheme may be coming to an end next month, but Kirsty Balfour, Kris Gilchrist, Gregor Tait and Alena Popchanka are going to have good company before heading out to the British Olympic holding camp in Osaka in Japan next week.
Ellen Gandy, at 16 the youngest GB swimmer heading for Beijing, has joined head coach Fred Vergnoux and will train with the Edinburgh outfit for a few days of final preparation.
Gandy, from Kent, is a butterfly specialist and is one of GB's bright young talents.
Pierre Roger, French record-holder in the 100m backstroke, has also taken the chance to spend a few days training at the Royal Commonwealth Pool. Tait is Britain's top man in the backstroke.
The City of Edinburgh set-up is due to close after the Olympics - bringing to an end a 12-year success story. Vergnoux and his Popchanka - his wife - are set to move back to France.
As for the Edinburgh swimmers, decisions have yet to be made. Gilchrist is already fully committed to go on to compete in London 2012, but will have to find a new training venue. Balfour, who gets married in October, and 29-year-old Tait have still to decide about their futures.
