Todd Cooper determined to hit form at European Championships
Todd Cooper insists his batteries are turbo-charged after two months out of the water with an average showing in Beijing now well and truly behind him.
In his second Olympic appearance, the 25-year-old former Stirling swimmer came fifth in his 100m butterfly heat - failing to progress to the semi-final stage.
Cooper was on an early flight home as Michael Phelps set the Water Cube alight with his miraculous eight gold medals leaving the 2006 European bronze medallist with plenty of time from reflection.
But having spent eight weeks without a pair of goggles in sight, Cooper - who has joined forces with Scottish Swimming supremo Eileen Adams after coach of ten years Chris Martin moved on to pastures new - insists he is ready to bounce back starting with the European Short Course Championships in December.
"I've spent my time physically and mentally relaxing," said Cooper, who has relocated to Glasgow. "I was in desperate need of some down time and a period of time where I didn't have to be so disciplined.
"But I'm really looking forward to a fresh approach to training. Ten years is a quite a length of time to spend with a coach but Chris has decided to move into management I have to respect that.
"Coming back from Beijing was difficult for me. I wasn't overly disappointed with my performance - the 100m was super-quick - but I was gutted not to get a second swim.
"But now I've got the Euros to look forward to. I've always done OK there before but never managed to get a medal so hopefully I can put that right in Croatia.
"I'm fully focused and it feels like a clean slate after a healthy break. We've got a healthy mix of youth and experience in the team that's been picked and I'd like to think I can act as a mentor to those making their GB debuts."
Cooper endured a similar fate in his previous Olympic appearance in Athens, finishing 27th fastest, again falling just short of the qualification marker.
But the Kidderminster-born ace is determined to make it third time lucky at London 2012 as the GB men bid to keep up with the golden girls of British swimming.
"Beccy (Adlington) was fantastic but I do think it was coincidence that the girls seemed to do better than us because in the past it has been the other way around.
"But I'll certainly be looking to put that right starting with the European Championships. Preparations are already well underway for London - that is the ultimate goal."
