David Carry hits the road in quest for pool glory
David Carry has vowed to swap his swimsuit for a pair of trainers as he looks to repeat his Melbourne Commonwealth Games success in Delhi in 2010.
The 28-year-old has experienced a frustrating last 12 months, securing a place on the plane to the World Championships in Rome but only in the 4x200m freestyle relay and not in an individual event.
However, with the Commonwealth Games in India less than a year away, the Scot, who claimed double gold four years ago, has promised to overhaul his Delhi preparations.
Carry has stalled since his Melbourne heroics in 2006 but the City of Aberdeen swim star is convinced it’s the hard yards on the road and not in the pool that will make the difference come 2010.
“The season is going to be one big build-up for the Commonwealths,” said Carry. “I’m going to concentrate on agility on land – doing running drills and sprints.
“If you develop your speed and power outside the water, you should be able to transfer that on to your kicks and turns.
“Off the walls is where the British team have been falling behind a bit so we want to improve that. And the best way to improve that strength is to do running drills.
“The Commonwealth Games are only a year away now so that’s going to give us a chance to do things we wouldn’t usually get to do.
“Any chance I get to race against the best in the world is exciting. It’s what motivates me as a swimmer and what gets me up on the dark mornings to go training.”
