Americans dominate

Hannah Miley, Caitlin McClatchey and Robbie Renwick were the three Scots that took part in the Duel in the Pool – a first head-to-head match between Europe and the USA – in Manchester.

It ended with a thumping 185-78 victory for the American side led by Olympic legend Michael Phelps.

Miley was the Scot with most reason to be happy as she set a new European record when finishing third in 4:24.51 in the 400m individual medley.

Earlier this month, the Garioch 20-year-old won the European Short-course Championship gold medal over the same distance.

“It’s great to go faster again,” said Miley. “When you get to race against the best in the world it brings out the best in you.”

However, if the BBC-televised event is to grow in stature, the hope is that more Europeans will be available this year. This time it was GB, Germany and Italy – and they couldn’t take on the might of America.
