Scottish men start strongly

Scotland's men set up a Pool A decider against holders England after two fine opening day wins at the European squash Championships in Zotermeer in the Netherlands.

Led by Scottish Champion Alan Clyne, who won both matches, the Scots whitewashed Belgium 4-0 and then followed up with a 3-1 win over Denmark. Chris Small and Stuart Crawford were the other double winners.

But it will be a tough task to overcome the English. The only time that Scotland did beat the Auld Enemy was when they won European Championship back in 1992.

But it was a disappointing day for the Scottish women. Lisa Aitken managed a 9-3 9-4 9-1 win over Saara Valtola (Finland), but a 3-0 defeat from Wales was followed by a 2-1 loss to the Fins.

It meant that Scotland finished bottom of Pool C, and Aitken, Claire Kidd, Frania Gillen-Buchert and Caron Lawrie now go into the play-offs for places 12-19.
