Scots trounce Venezuela but lose to Italy

Scotland whitewashed Venezuela in the final of the Pool H round-robin matches to make sure of a place in the top 16 at the world men’s team championships in Odense in Denmark.

After a second day 3-0 defeat from Italy, Chris Small, Alan Clyne and Stuart Crawford bounced back to secure the win that guarantees an improvement from the 18th place finish in India two years ago.

Small, the Italian based 31-year-old, beat Juan Fabio Sanchez 11-3 11-4 1104 and Clyne, the Scottish No.1 from Inverness, clinched the win with an even easier 11-0 11-3 11-1 over Francisco Valecillo. In the dead rubber, Crawford dropped a game, but still beat Juan Fabio Rothie 11-4 7-11 11-0 11-3.

Having beaten India on day one, Clyne and Scottish Champion Stuart Crawford both lost 3-1 against the Italians, while Small, who is based in Florence, went 7-11 7-11 8-11 to Marcus Berrett.
