Anthony takes home Scottish Junior crown
Aberdeen’s Hannah Anthony scored a big upset when she beat clubmate Mhairi Charlton in a dramatic five game final of the under-17 championship at yesterday’s Scottish Junior Open at Heriot-Watt University at Riccarton.
Mhairi was the top seed and is Scotland’s top under-23 player, but Hannah, ranked No. 8 at under-18 level, came from 2-1 down in games to win 11-8 4-11 8-11 11-9 11-7. She is the first Scot to win a title since 1998.
In the boys’ under-19 final, Canada’s Nicholas Sachvie, who had knocked out Scotland’s No.1 Chris Ferguson in the quarter-finals, came from two games behind to defeat Todd Harrity 5-11 9-11 11-5 11-8 11-7, while Japan’s Misaki Kobayashi beat England’s Sarah-Jane Perry 11-6 11-6 14-12 to take the main girls’ title.
Ferguson was the top home player in the under-19s, beating fellow-Scot Ian Jubb (Tyne) 11-6 11-3 11-3 in the seventh place play-off, while Lisa Aitken (Montrose), who won the under-11 championship ten years ago, was the best of the Scots in the girls’ under-19. She also finished seventh thanks to an 11-2 11-9 11-3 win over Perth’s Claire Gray.
