Doubles event cancelled

Scotland’s had high hopes of success at this month’s World Doubles Championships – but the event scheduled to take place in Chennai from December 15-19 has been postponed due to the security concerns in India following last week’s Mumbai terrorist attack.

“It’s really disappointing,” admitted Scotland’s top woman, Frania Gillen-Buchert, who was due to play in the mixed doubles with Alan Clyne. “We’ve all put in a lot of hard work and now it feels that it was all for nothing.”

Scotland’s George Mieras, the on-site Tournament Director, had little option than to call off next week’s event after the Australian team expressed concern about the situation

"Perhaps the rescheduling of the Test match between India and England to Chennai starting 11th December might have increased the prominence of Chennai - but it seems quite clear to me that other High Commissions are likely to give the same advice and it is not appropriate for us to counter this," said Mieras.

Mieras went on to say that the hope was to reschedule the event for sometime next year.

Scottish National coach Roger Flynn had targeted the doubles as a real opportunity for the team to win medals at world level.

The players selected were Men: Jamie Macaulay, Stuart Crawford, Alan Clyne, Harry Leitch. Women: Claire Kidd, Alex Cark, Frania Gillen-Buchert, Lisa Aitken.
